Air Duct Cleaning and Chimney Care in Haddonfield, NJ

About half of Haddonfield's houses were built before 1940, and in 1971 the borough became the second town in New Jersey, after Cape May, to create a historic preservation district. AMG Duct Cleaning comes over the Cooper River from our Cherry Hill base to work on houses where the ductwork often arrived decades after the chimney.

Haddonfield broke away from Haddon Township in 1875 and counted 12,550 residents at the 2020 census. Its business district sits where Kings Highway, Route 41, crosses Haddon Avenue. The Indian King Tavern there, finished in 1750, hosted the New Jersey Legislature in 1777 when it adopted the state's Great Seal, and in 1858 a marl pit in the borough gave up Hadrosaurus foulkii, the first relatively complete dinosaur skeleton found in North America. The Haddonfield Historic District joined the National Register in 1982.

Houses of that age were often built for steam, hot water or gravity heat, and the ducts they carry now were threaded through closets, chases and attic floors whenever an owner added central air. Air duct cleaning here starts with tracing those runs. Air duct repair and air duct installation come up more often than in a newer Camden County town, because a retrofit seldom brought enough return air to the second floor.

Air conditioning added to a prewar house

In a house like this the cooling often comes from an attic air handler that supplies the upstairs through ceiling registers, while radiators or a basement furnace heat the first floor. The attic unit is the one nobody sees: flexible runs laid across the joists, a return grille in the hallway ceiling, a condensate line that has to find a drain.

Flexible duct sags between joists until the airflow drops, and a loose collar draws attic dust and insulation fiber into the air stream. We support and straighten the runs, reseal the connections and clean what the system has collected. Where the whole second floor shares one return, adding another is usually the change that most helps a hot bedroom.

Exterior work inside the historic district

Inside the historic district, the borough wants a Certificate of Appropriateness before an owner changes how a building looks from outside, and its own examples start with roofs and siding. The Historic Preservation Commission reviews the design and the Planning Board gives final approval. Two kinds of vent work can fall under that rule: a new dryer vent hood cut through a visible wall, and a chimney cap or crown rebuilt in a different form.

Dryer vent installation on a district house is planned so the new run exits where the change shows least, usually a side or rear wall, and the application goes in before any cutting. Chimney repair that alters the look of the stack follows the same order. Dryer vent cleaning and chimney cleaning leave the exterior untouched, and the borough's zoning officer can answer borderline cases.

Masonry flues serving gas appliances

Most houses in the borough heat with natural gas, and in a house of this age the boiler or furnace and the water heater frequently vent up a masonry chimney first built for coal or wood. Some of those flues have clay tile liners, some had a metal liner added during an equipment change, and some have neither.

Opening the flue for cleaning is also the inspection. Cracked tiles, mortar washed out of the joints above the roof and a split crown let water and exhaust go where they should not, and those repairs are easier to book in September than in January. Wood fires, even occasional ones, leave creosote on a cool masonry flue.

A record on the Cooper River, and damp foundations

The Cooper River forms the border with Cherry Hill, and its gage at Haddonfield set a new record on July 13, 2004, running at about 1.1 times the 100-year flow, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Old stone and brick foundations can pass ground moisture that a poured wall would hold back, and a return grille cut into a finished basement pulls that air into the system.

The coil and the drain pan are where growth usually starts. Mold treatment and removal covers the ductwork and the equipment attached to it, and it holds once the moisture source is dealt with; HVAC UV light installation then puts a lamp to work on the coil in the stretch between cleanings. Neither one stands in for a dehumidifier in a damp basement.

Scheduling work in Haddonfield

The borough is compact, two miles or less across, and the same crew works the older blocks of Haddon Township and Haddon Heights along its edges. We begin at the heating plant and its return, then the attic system, the dryer run and each flue, and the walk-through reports on every system separately.

Our crews work for a licensed and insured, veteran owned company that picks up the phone 8 AM to 8 PM, Monday to Saturday. A free estimate follows the walk-through, and anything that calls for borough approval is flagged before the work goes on the calendar.

Questions and answers

Our house is in the historic district. Does a new chimney cap need approval?

It can. The borough asks for a Certificate of Appropriateness for changes to a building's exterior appearance, and a cap in a new style or material may count. The zoning officer can tell you whether yours is a like-for-like repair. Cleaning the flue changes nothing outside.

We have radiators downstairs and ducted air conditioning upstairs. What does duct cleaning cover?

The ducted system only: the attic air handler, its supply runs and registers, the return and the coil. We also check the condensate line and pan, because a blocked drain above a bedroom ceiling eventually leaks through it.

Can a new dryer vent go out the front of the house?

A side or rear wall usually serves better. A shorter run with fewer turns dries faster, and a hood away from the street-facing facade keeps the change out of the view the borough reviews.

Why does our basement smell musty only in summer?

Cooling pulls humid air across a cold coil, and water that sits in the drain pan or in a low spot of the duct feeds growth. We look at the pan, the coil and the basement return first, then decide what the system calls for.
