Duct Cleaning and Chimney Repair in Haddon Heights, NJ

Haddon Heights began in 1890, when Benjamin Lippincott built a station for the Atlantic City Railroad on his land and filed a grid of streets around it. Census estimates date more than four of every ten homes in the borough to before 1940, and AMG Duct Cleaning works these large early houses and the 1940s and 1950s blocks that followed them.

This Camden County borough was incorporated in 1904 from the old Centre Township and part of Haddon Township, with Lippincott elected mayor, and it had 7,495 residents at the 2020 census. The name came from its nearness to Haddonfield and its high ground. Families moving out from the cities built big houses, many of them Foursquares or in the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles, and in 1926 the Fairfield Estates section of Centre Township voted to join the borough, then filled with single-family houses through the 1940s and 1950s.

Rail passenger service ended in 1965, but the town kept its railroad-suburb layout, with Interstate 295 on the south, Route 168 on the west and Route 41 on the east. Natural gas heats the great majority of homes. In the older houses the work starts with air duct cleaning, chimney cleaning and chimney repair, since a gas furnace or boiler there often vents through a chimney nearly as old as the house.

Foursquares, Queen Annes and three floors of air

A Foursquare or a Queen Anne from the borough's first decades has two full floors and often a finished third, with heat that began as steam, hot water or gravity air. Ducts arrived later, threaded through closets and chases to reach the upper floors, and the top floor is often the room that never cools.

Air duct repair reconnects and reseals the runs serving the top of the house, and air duct installation cuts in a second return on the upper floor where one grille in the downstairs hall is doing all the work. Cleaning follows once the system holds pressure.

Fairfield Estates and the postwar blocks

The houses built on the Fairfield Estates land in the 1940s and 1950s are smaller and plainer, each with a basement furnace whose trunk line branches out to the rooms. Census estimates put nearly three in ten of the borough's homes in the 1950s alone.

At seventy-some years, these systems show loose joints and boots, returns that leak into the basement, and dryer vents that exit through the rim joist a few feet from the machine. The short run and its hood get cleared in a dryer vent cleaning, while dryer vent installation gives a laundry that moved up from the basement a proper rigid route.

Brick chimneys with more than one flue

A Colonial Revival or Queen Anne house often has a brick chimney carrying two flues, one for a living room fireplace and one for the heating plant. Its crown has taken more than ninety winters, and water that gets past it runs down inside the stack to stain a wall or a ceiling.

Chimney cleaning clears both flues and lets us inspect the tile. Chimney repair rebuilds the crown, repoints the joints above the roofline, fits a cap and reseals the flashing, and a liner goes in where cracked tile is letting exhaust reach the brick.

King's Run and damp old basements

Before the Revolution a miller dammed King's Run here to power a fulling mill. Old basements of stone, brick or block can wick ground moisture after a wet spell, and if the finished lower level has a return in it, the whole system breathes that air.

Where it has reached the coil or the pan, mold treatment and removal clears growth from the ducts and the equipment after the source is fixed. A UV lamp fitted through HVAC UV light installation then shines on the coil through the months between cleanings.

Visiting Haddon Heights

The borough is a short drive from our Cherry Hill base, beside Haddonfield and Haddon Township, and Route 168 runs south from its western edge to Gloucester Township. Large old houses take longer to read, so we map each floor's supply and return before quoting.

A veteran owned company does the work here. AMG is licensed and insured, answers 8 AM to 8 PM, Monday to Saturday, and the estimate after the walk-through is free.

Questions and answers

Our third floor never cools in summer. Is it the ducts?

Often. Heat collects at the top of a tall house, and the runs to the third floor are the longest and leakiest in the system. We check those runs and the return path before suggesting a cleaning, a repair or a new return.

We have two chimneys and never light either fireplace. Do they still need care?

Yes. If a flue carries the furnace or water heater, it is working every day in winter, and even an idle stack takes rain at the crown and nests at the top. A cap and an inspection keep both from turning into a leak.

Our dryer is in the basement and vents a few feet out. Can a short run still clog?

It can, mostly at the hood. A short run fills where the flap sticks or a screen catches lint, and birds like a warm vent. We clean the run and the hood and check that the flap swings free.

We live in Fairfield Estates. Is our 1950s ductwork worth keeping?

In most cases, yes. We look at how the trunk and branches are hung, whether the seams hold and whether the return leaks. Sound runs get sealed and cleaned, and only damaged or undersized sections are replaced.
